The first step in achieving a lighter flow is understanding why you have excessive bleeding.
Let’s talk physiology…
Estrogen causes the lining to grow and thicken to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. A minimum of 5 days of estrogen exposure is required to build a sufficiently thick endometrium (the innermost lining of the uterus) which is why women with too much estrogen experience a very heavy period. Following ovulation (around Day 14), levels of progesterone begin to increase. Progesterone prepares the endometrium to receive and nourish a fertilized egg. If pregnancy does not occur, estrogen and progesterone levels decrease. The decrease in progesterone triggers menstruation, or shedding of the lining. Once the lining is completely shed, a new menstrual cycle begins.
One of the possible causes of a very heavy menstrual flow is estrogen dominance. Estrogen lays down a very thick, heavy, dense, dark lining forming the ‘foundation’ of the uterus, preparing it for implantation. It is needed for a strong uterine tone to maintain a pregnancy. In females who have too much estrogen (that could be from not excreting it effectively or not producing enough progesterone in relation to estrogen) end up with heavy, clotty, dark painful periods. In the second half of the cycle, progesterone lays down a thinner, lighter, ‘fluffy’ lining which forms a cushion for the embryo to implant in. Therefore in a normal period we should see more of the latter – a brighter, lighter, moderate flow with no clots.
Are there other options in treating heavy, painful periods besides the Pill?
Yes. After evaluating a patient, based on their history and symptoms, I use a combination of homeopathic medicine, changes to diet, exercise and lifestyle (Go With Your Flow Program in relation to their specific needs) and prescribe the correct supplementation. Many women experience a lighter, more pleasant, pain and clot free flow following the start of treatment.
